Whenever the board determines that a firefighter or policeman has become temporarily disabled, mentally or physically, as a result of an injury received in the performance of duty, the disabled firefighter or policeman shall be paid monthly, out of the fund, during the period of his or her disability, a sum equal to 60 percent of the monthly compensation he or she was receiving from the city at the time he or she became disabled. But any benefits payable upon this section shall be reduced by an amount equal to the amount, if any, which the beneficiary receives from the city as salary during disability.
