(a)(1) Pursuant to Amendment 380 to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, the Russell County Coroner shall receive an annual salary of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000). The county coroner shall be entitled to the same cost-of-living increases as provided to other elected officials in Russell County. The county coroner shall be provided health insurance, which shall be paid from the county general fund.

(4) The Russell County Commission may reimburse the county coroner for reasonable expenses incurred from October 2, 2000, until April 24, 2002, and accepted by the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts. The Russell County Commission shall determine the amount of the reimbursement. The reimbursement shall be paid from the county general fund.
(b) The Russell County Coroner may appoint up to two deputy coroners. Any additional employees shall be approved by the county commission. The annual salary for a deputy coroner shall be no less than three thousand dollars ($3,000). The deputy coroner shall be entitled to the same cost-of-living increases as provided by law for other county officials. A deputy coroner shall have the same qualifications as the county coroner, shall serve under the supervision of the county coroner and subject to the county coroner’s procedures for conducting death investigations, and shall otherwise carry out the duties of the office at the direction of the county coroner. The county coroner may dismiss a deputy coroner from service for violating procedures or for acts of misconduct. Any deputy coroner hired by the county coroner shall serve at the pleasure of the county coroner.
(c) All salaries and commission approved budgeted items shall be paid from the General Fund of Russell County and approved by the county commission. The annual salaries provided for under subsections (a) and (b) shall be paid at the same intervals as other county officials and shall be paid in lieu of any other salaries heretofore provided by law for the county coroner and any deputy coroner. The county commission may adjust the salaries, benefits, and any other compensation of the county coroner and any deputy coroner by resolution.
(d) The county coroner shall be allowed to charge fees for duplication of documents. The fee rate shall be set by the county commission. All fees or charges collected by the county coroner shall be deposited into the Russell County General Fund.
(e) The county coroner and any deputy coroner may certify any death occurring within the boundaries of the state.
(f) This section shall not be implemented until approved by the Russell County Commission.
