In all counties having populations of not less than 300,000 nor more than 500,000 according to the last federal decennial census, the chief deputy sheriff shall be paid a salary of not less than Range 41, Step D, twenty-nine thousand three hundred forty dollars ($29,340) annually. The salary to be adjusted at the same time and at the same percentage rate as merit system employees in the county. The chief clerk in the sheriff’s department shall be paid a salary of not less than Range 41, Step D, twenty-nine thousand three hundred forty dollars ($29,340) annually.
