Any individual committed to the custody of the sheriff may be required, as a condition of release, probation, or sentence, to serve weekends or other times or intervals of time as directed by the court having jurisdiction. While in custody, the individual shall be the responsibility of the sheriff and shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the Lawrence County jail. A defendant shall receive one day’s credit for each 24 hours of confinement in the jail. If a defendant spends part of a 24-hour period released and a part of that 24-hour period confined, then he or she shall receive one day’s credit toward his or her sentence.
