In 1958 during the final months of the Batista regime, plaintiff-appellant, a Cuban citizen, at various times obtained five certificates of deposit, totaling $227,336.47, from defendant-respondent Chase Manhattan Bank’s Mar[403]*403ianao branch in Havana.
